Based on the Gothic novel, ‘The Monk: A Romance ‘, by Mattew Gregory Lewis, published in 1796.

Some people have asked for information on the inspiration for the painting of the monk (Ambrosio) so i have posted this link to the wiki page ,enjoy 🙂 also i see Vincent Cassel has a movie out based on this novel
